He was an outstanding example of the bookman-librarian, the quality of whose work outside his libraries even surpassed the high standard within them. He edited the L.Asst. from 1939 until 1946 and the LAR from 1946 until 1953. He compiled many bibliographies for the NBL; a welcome, less expected, addition to his publications, was his book on Middlesex (1972).
